Toolbox Tuesday
Build Your Skill Set and Strengthen Your Community

Complementary Professional Development
In alignment with SCAG’s strategic goals to produce innovative solutions that improve the quality of life for Southern Californians and be the foremost data information hub, Toolbox Tuesday aims to provide a range of planning knowledge and technical skills for local planners including training on various tools and resources on emerging planning topics such as equity, environmental justice, traffic safety, housing, transportation, sustainability, spatial analytics, programming language, and data literacy.
Toolbox Tuesday offers professional, complementary, and virtual training to local government staff and other stakeholders within our six-county region through the monthly webinar. As a bonus, most trainings provided through Toolbox Tuesday are eligible for AICP Certification Maintenance credits.
Trending and Timely Topics
Toolbox Tuesday provides a quick, one-half-hour-long focus on a single subject. The sessions are planned at a level that a variety of people—including elected officials, local planners, community organizers, students, and community members—can gain practical skills and knowledge on timely planning issues. Offering this training virtually and free of cost provides all local jurisdictions access to high-quality training and technical assistance. By bringing together planners from diverse areas in the region, the sessions allow jurisdictions to share and learn from each other about the successes and nuances on various planning topics.
For additional information regarding technical assistance and feedback about Toolbox Tuesday, please contact the Local Information Services Team (LIST) at list@scag.ca.gov.
Upcoming Toolbox Tuesday Training
Join SCAG on April 7 for the “Curb Space Management – Local Lessons” Toolbox Tuesday session.
With a general rise in vehicle ownership, disruptive technologies (e.g., transportation network companies and dockless electric scooters), and a COVID-19-era shift in sidewalk activities, including reliance on delivery services, curb space has become one of the most constrained resources in cities. Cities have faced challenges with on- and off-street parking, congestion, and first/last mile connections as demand for curb space grows.
SCAG has been studying curb space challenges from a regional perspective since the “Last-Mile Freight Delivery Study,” published in 2020. This session will examine what SCAG, local agencies, and private sector stakeholders have learned through the “Curb Space Management Study” (2022), “Curb Space Data Inventory Study” (2024), and “Zero-Emissions and Smart Delivery Zones Study” (2025), which produced data-driven curb management strategies, practical policy guidance, and technology-based solutions tailored to diverse local contexts. These studies advance collaborative pilot concepts and implementation plans for participating cities, which can serve as useful case studies for other communities seeking solutions to their curb space issues.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), SCAG provides accommodations for persons who require them to participate in public meetings. SCAG also provides translations of its documents upon request in accordance with Title VI. Both services can be requested with at least 72 hours (three days) notice in advance of the meetings by calling (213) 236-1895.

Environmental risks, such as drought, wildfire, and earthquakes, are not confined by municipal boundaries. Collaborative, big-picture planning and information sharing can limit effects of these disasters and accelerate recovery, both for local communities and the entire Southern California region.
The Regional Resilience Toolkit, published in March by SCAG, supports Southern California communities with resilience planning and is intended for use by any jurisdiction in Southern California, regardless of size, population, experience in resilience planning, or direct encounters with the shocks and stressors of the current age.
Attend the session to learn more about how local jurisdictions can:
- Understand the benefits of local and regional resilience planning.
- Plan for resilience at a range of scales, from integrating resilience into existing plans and programs to developing a standalone plan.
- Clearly outline key resilience planning steps.
- Identify and pursue funding resources and strategies.
